Health Officials Update Status of Lily Lake

Health officials met with residents of Stillwater to give an update on status of Lily Lake. Two young, children have died after swimming in Lily Lake over the past two years.

The most recent death was just a few weeks ago. In each case, the children contracted a rare, amoeba which comes from warm, fresh water bodies.

State health officials told residents this cases were tragic, but very rare and that swimming, generally speaking, is extremely safe in all of our lakes and rivers.

For now, Lily Lake remains closed for the rest of the season. Health officials did not make any decisions about the future of the lake when they met Monday night with Stillwater citizens.

They did say there is a possibility they will monitor the water temperatures in Lily Lake next year and when it becomes too warm they will temporarily shut down the lake until the water temperature cools.
