Mayor R.T. Rybak has been a fixture at City Hall for nearly 12 years, but he hasn't decided what comes next. The Mayor tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, in an exclusive interview, that he has not decided if he will seek a fourth term in November 2013. Mayor Rybak won the election in 2001 and never indicated he would not run for re-election in his last two victories.
Right now, Mayor Rybak is extremely busy with his full-time job, and then he spends a lot of time stumping for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign. Rybak is the first Minneapolis Mayor to be named Vice-Chair of the Democratic National Committee. He has spent a lot of time volunteering at that job criss-crossing the country and the national television airwaves. Mayor Rybak tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS "some people hunt and fish for hobbies, my hobby is campaigning."
We asked Mayor Rybak, if he would be interested in a job with the Obama Administration, if the President wins re-election and asked him to serve in Washington. He didn't say "yes", but he didn't say "no", either. Mayor Rybak says he "lives in the City he loves and loves the job that he has." And he added, "if I were interested in working in Washington, I would have done so four years ago." We did some research and found that was the same quote he used in 2009 when he was asked if he would run for Governor. Then, less than a week after winning re-election, he filed papers to run for Governor. Mayor Rybak told us those were two different years and the comparison of being Governor, or taking a job in Washington, was apples to oranges.
