Neighborhood Watch Participation Falls as Burglaries Spike
Golden Valley is asking those not involved in neighborhood watches to begin participating.
National Night Out is a chance for neighbors and police to stand together in a show of unity against crime. Neighbors get to know one another and police.
But Golden Valley says participation in the neighborhood watch program is decreasing just as the number of reported burglaries is increasing, though police do not believe the two are linked.
Officials blame waning participation on changing demographics and communication preferences. People like to communicate electronically rather than in small groups.
Additionally, people may have become a bit complacent as Golden Valley enjoyed historically low crime rates last year, according to the city.
Either way, neighbors are being urged to become more involved.
