Parks and Rec Board Testing New Technique to Remove Milfoil

The Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board faced a new challenge at one of their swim beaches.

The beach at Wirth Lake has a new dock that encloses the beach making it impossible for milfoil harvesting machines to reach the plants.

Deb Pilger, Director of Environmental Operations for Parks and Rec says even though the plants could not be reached, they still needed to be removed, "This is the first time we've tried hand pulling of weeds by scuba divers. We're doing it at Wirth Lake and Lake Nokomis."

Derek Lee works for Waterfront Restoration, a company that uses crews in scuba gear to hand pick milfoil from affected areas, he says crews are having an impact, "This is a second visit... so it's pretty light compared to what we saw the first visit out here."
