Mpls. Fire Station Saves 8 Lives in Less than 1 Year

Station Six pulled more people from burning buildings in one year than most firefighters do in years. On Saturday morning, five people were trapped in a burning home in South Minneapolis. Unfortunately, one died, but firefighters pulled four others to safety, including a baby. Station Six has now saved seven people from burning buildings in the last year, and each time they faced serious threats to their own safety in doing so.

An eighth person was saved by a captain at Station Six as well. The man was threatening to jump off the Groveland Ave. Bridge into oncoming traffic on I-94. Station Six firefighters responded and cut holes in the chain link fence that serves as a safety barrier for pedestrians. When the man let go and was about to jump, Captain J.R. Klepp reached through one of the holes and prevented the man from landing in traffic and possibly causing harm to himself and motorists.

Firefighters at Station Six tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that they've had an unusually busy year, and one firefighter described the life-saving efforts they've been faced with as "surreal."
