A college prep program in St. Paul has a perfect record. In the past two years, 'Breakthrough Saint Paul' has a 100-percent success rate sending students to college.
These are kids who might not otherwise have a chance to continue their education; 83-percent of the students who get to college with the help of 'Breakthrough Saint Paul' are the first in their family to ever go. Many of the students don't have the money to pay tuition but they have motivation to earn scholarships.
St. Paul students apply to get into the program in sixth grade. For the next six years, there's summer school, counseling, and weekend work with one goal in mind; getting these students into college.
Breakthrough is supported by individual donations, a federal grant and help from St. Paul public schools and Mounds Park Academy.
The kids go to summer school for six weeks, seven hours a day, and they are not allowed to miss a day.
