Minnesota Hog Farm Denies Abuse Allegations

Christensen Farms & Feedlots Inc., headquartered in Sleepy Eye, says it follows standard industry practices and claims it's an industry leader in animal care.

However, the farm comes under fire as the group "Mercy For Animals" is releasing an undercover video it says depicts animal abuse.  A "Mercy For Animals" staff member recorded the video while posing as an employee at Christensen Farms from December 2011-March 2012.

The group is most critical of gestation crates the farm uses to protect pregnant sows and their piglets. While Christensen says the crates are standard in the industry, the group is asking Costco to stop selling pork supplied by Christensen.

In response, Costco issued a letter addressed to suppliers that reads, in part, "... we want all of the hogs throughout our pork supply chain to be housed in groups with access to safety zones and expect that transition should be accomplished no later than 2022."
