Critics: School Superintendent Contract 'Way Over the Top'

Critics are accusing the school board of the Westonka District of giving excessive pay raises and benefits to the district's superintendent, part of a new contract finalized last week that some call "way over the top."
"It's unacceptable," said former school board member Tom Notch, who lost re-election last year.
The district, whose board approved the contract by a six to one vote, counters that the costs of replacing Kevin Borg, now entering his seventh year as leader of the 2,235-student district along Lake Minnetonka, would far exceed his nine percent salary raise this year and next and the severance pay and health benefits included.

"Our superintendent has been consistently very low paid," Dave Botts, chairman of the school board, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS in a phone interview Monday.
"Based on his accomplishments leading the district, it was very important for a majority of the board to get him to an acceptable salary."
