Number of Incarcerated Parents is on the Rise in U.S.

The Senser daughters join a growing, staggering statistic. There are an estimated 1.7 million children with a mom or dad serving a sentence in a state or federal prison.

Joe and Amy Senser have two daughters together who were 14 and 15-years-old when their mother was convicted.

A developmental psychologist at the University of Minnesota says since 1990 the number of moms serving time has nearly doubled. Rebecca Shlafer says these children face unique challenges and may deal with depression or post traumatic stress disorder.

She says stability is key, and for the Senser girls it helps immensely that they have a father who is active in their lives. They also will likely benefit from being able to frequently visit their mom who is serving time in Shakopee.
