EmailHeat Affects Businesses, But 'Cool' Temps Help Them Recover
Saturday was the Fourth of July at Canterbury Park in Shakopee. Because of the extreme heat earlier in the week, their annual Independence Day celebrations and races had to be postponed to Saturday.
They said their first concern was for the safety of the horses, then the comfort of spectators. They were expecting about 12,000 people to come on Wednesday, and ultimately on Saturday the crowd was around between 8,000 and 10,000.
"It was a very tough decision, especially knowing the Fourth of July is always one of our biggest days," said Canterbury Park CEO Randy Sampson. "We hoped we could make up for it on Saturday and get a good crowd, and it worked out just like we'd hoped."
It's the first time ever they've had to postpone a race due to heat.
