Best Buy Laying Off 2,400 Store, Geek Squad Employees

Best Buy is moving forward with a new round of layoffs.

Best Buy spokesman Bruce Hight tells 5 EYEWITNESS News a total of 2,400 employees are being laid off.

Of those employees, 1,800 work at Best Buy stores, while 600 work for Geek Squad.

This new round of layoffs is in addition to previously announced job cuts.

The company had announced in March it planned to close 50 stores nationwide, and cut 400 corporate jobs in an effort to save $800 million over the next three years.

This news comes just weeks after Best Buy's interim CEO Mike Mikan declared "we will do better" at the company's annual shareholders meeting.

"We can no longer just focus on the box," Mikan told several hundred people gathered in the theater at the company's headquarters June 21.

At this point, additional details on the new round of layoffs have not been released.
