Volunteers Keeping Close Eye on Seniors During Extreme Heat

The Centers for Disease Control says seniors are especially susceptible to heat stroke and they need to take extra care in this extreme heat.

There's a local program called Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, which helps out seniors year round by keeping them company and helping them with errands. But when it's this hot outside, their role takes on extra importance.

They make extra visits to seniors, during which they ask questions about how seniors are feeling and make sure they stay cool.

"If they're suffering from dehydration or something due to the heat and they don't have a lot of contact with people every day, that might go unnoticed," said Gretchen Vanderlinden-Wang, with Little Brothers. "So we try to be extra vigilant in this hot weather to check in on people and see how they're doing."

While they're always look for volunteers, you can help out just by checking on elderly people in your neighborhood by knocking on their door and seeing if they need anything.
