Wis. Boy Located After Search Released From Hospital

The 5-year-old boy who was found safe after disappearing from his Wisconsin home was released from the hospital Thursday.

Scott Meyer, known as "Scotty," spent Wednesday night at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, where he was treated for dehydration and severe tick and mosquito bites.

Scotty, the youngest of three boys with autism, disappeared from his home in Oak Grove, Wis., Tuesday before noon. Scotty's mom thinks he snuck out when an air conditioning repairman was coming and going at the home.

A massive search began, with a command post stationed near the family's home. People drove in to help - some on ATVs, others on foot or even horseback. The area has a difficult terrain with cornfields and steep river bluffs in the area. Some searchers were even taken away by ambulance for heat exhaustion.

The good news came Wednesday morning: Scotty had been found safe. The boy was located on a bluff near the Mississippi River by volunteer Jason Moser and his dog, a golden retriever named Autumn. They found Scotty in a wooded area with steep hills and ravines, about a half mile from his home.

The dog received IV fluids for dehydration Thursday and is also back home Friday.

In a statement released Wednesday evening, Scotty's parents said they are grateful to Pierce County law enforcement, volunteers, friends and family for all their support and dedication in helping find their son.

During the search, crews used Scotty's red striped fleece blanket, training K9's to pick up his scent. The blanket is now missing. If you were in the area during that time or have seen it, email tips@kstp.com.
