Rescuers Rappel Down Bluff Near Mississippi River to Reach Vehicle

St. Paul police and fire officials worked to rescue people from inside a vehicle that went off a bluff along the Mississippi River Wednesday morning.

The Ramsey County watch commander tells 5 EYEWITNESS News that rescuers rappelled down to reach the vehicle. The crash scene is near Hidden Falls park, which is south of the Ford plant.

St. Paul authorities say the SUV swerved to avoid another car around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday and tumbled 40 feet down an embankment, leaving the driver and passenger with unspecified injuries.

The vehicle landed on its wheels among some trees in a river bluff. It took them 20 to 30 minutes to remove the occupants through the vehicle's roof.

Deputy fire Chief Matt Simpson says the two have been taken to a hospital. Their names and conditions weren't immediately released.
