St. Louis County Man Contracts West Nile Virus

Minnesota health officials have reported the state's first case of West Nile Virus for 2012.

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, a St. Louis County man became ill with the West Nile encephalitis and meningitis in May after traveling to south-central Minnesota. He is currently recovering at a hospital.

Health officials are urging you to protect yourself from mosquitoes this summer- through the autumn frost.

You can protect yourself by using mosquito repellents, minimizing outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, and wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeve shirts and pants while spending time in areas where mosquitoes are biting.

About 1 out of 150 people bitten by West Nile Virus infected mosquitoes will develop a central nervous system disease
