Excessive Heat Warning Extended through Thursday in Southern MN

An excessive heat warning will continue for much of southern Minnesota through Thursday.

Monday's heat was record breaking. KSTP.com Meteorologist Ken Barlow reports we hit 99 degrees.

The previous record was 96 degrees, which was set in 1911.

Because of humidity, heat index temperatures reached between 100-105 degrees.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

Experts recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and checking up on relatives and neighbors.

If you work or spend time outside, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible, drink plenty of water, and be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, so call 911 if you believe you or someone you know is suffering from one.

Hot temperatures forecasted for the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and wildfires burning out west are also creating a potentially unhealthy air situation in the Twin Cities.

Minnesota health officials have extended an air pollution warning in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area through Tuesday due to expected high levels of ozone.

There’s a chance of some thunderstorms moving through Minnesota late Monday night, but the chance of rain is slim Tuesday and Wednesday.

The entire week is expected to be hot with temperatures in the 90s through Friday. Relief could come next weekend with a cool down.
