17-Year-Old Dies After Pulled From Shakopee Lake

A 17-year-old boy who spent half an hour underwater before being pulled from a Shakopee lake Friday has died.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office says Jason Daquon Lewis of Shakopee died around 2:30 a.m Saturday at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Authorities say Lewis was fishing with family and friends on Lake O'Dowd when he jumped out of a rubber raft and attempted to swim about 20 to 30 yards to the shore of an island. It was at that time that the teen went under.

Authorities were called to the scene around 1:45 p.m. and crews located Lewis in about seven to eight feet of water. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital and later to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Authorities say alcohol was not a factor in the incident. The teen's grandmother had been watching the group from shore.

Lewis was a student at Shakopee High School.

“We in the school district are very saddened by this news," Superintendent Dr. Rod Thompson said in a statement. "Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy go to Jason’s family, friends and loved ones."
