EmailDNR, Sheriff's Officials Cracking Down on Drunk Boaters
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and sheriff's officials statewide are cracking down on drunk boat operators on Minnesota lakes.
Operation Dry Water is part of a nationwide effort to highlight the dangers of boating under the influence (BUI) ahead of the Fourth of July and the peak boating season.
Authorities say alcohol can impair a boater's judgment, balance, visibility and reaction time. It can also heighten the intensity of common boating stressors, such as sun, wind and noise.
5 EYEWITNESS News joined DNR conservation officers on Lake Minnetonka Saturday as they looked for boating violations, including BUI.
The consequences for BUI include a $1,000 fine, possible jail time and the loss of boat operating privileges for 90 days.
