Free H1N1 Vaccines For Children

Children got the chance to be vaccinated for the H1N1 virus Saturday for free.
Carver County Public Health offered the vaccine for kids ages 5-9, Saturday at Waconia High School.
Earlier this month, 5 Eyewitness News saw long lines at a clinic in Stillwater, which was giving hundreds of shots to high risk patients. A number of people who showed up were turned away.
About 600 kids in all turned up at Waconia, but none of them were turned away. "It feels good because it feels kind of that I won't get the flu or H1N1 now," said one child who received the vaccine.
According to organizers of the event, it was a success because of proper planning.
"We connected with each of the school districts and included parochial schools where we would be finding those children and got information home to parents," said Interim Director of Carver County Public Health Carolyn Smith.
Although many kids received vaccines today, health officials say kids nine years and younger need a second vaccine after a month has passed to maximize its effectiveness.
