Counties Prepared to Open H1N1 Vaccine Clinics

In some counties around Minnesota plans are underway to hand out large amounts of H1N1 vaccine at a moments notice.

Officials plan to do that by having sites ready to go in neighborhoods that could be opened to the public.

"It's frustrating. We've got plans in place ready to implement and we're just waiting for the vaccine," said Dr. Susan Palchick with the Public Health Protection.

In Hennepin County, eight anchor schools have been chosen. Plans are in the works to potentially have every high school opened as a clinic if needed.

"We're looking at layout, bathrooms, is there communication, parking, a bus route," said Dr. Palchick.

The county has already conducted vaccination drills. Crowds of volunteers were being poked with markers to give county workers an idea of what a mass clinic would feel and look like. The decision to have these venues at the ready is being made in Ramsey and as far away as Olmstead counties. Now officials are just waiting for the H1N1 vaccine to arrive.

"We're complaining that it's slow when actually production of the H1N1 vaccine has been much quicker than the seasonal vaccine," said Dr. Palchick.

Once the county gets those first doses and runs those clinics, officials will step back and review whether they need to do it again.
