Thieves Target Faribault Infant Cemetery
People in Faribault are furious after news a local cemetery for infants is the target of vandals.
Hundreds of babies are laid to rest at Maple Lawn Cemetery. Gravesites are sprinkled with teddy bears, cars and even actions figures.
Becky Bauer lost a baby during pregnancy in 2006. Her child is one of 500 buried at the grave who died as a result of a miscarriage or stillbirth.
"Having that angel there was part of the representation of where our baby is," said Bauer.
In the spring she placed an angel statue at the grave, but it was stolen along with another one last month.
"It not only made me upset, but for my children it did kind of hurt their feelings, knowing their angel is gone so it was kind of a sentimental thing too," Bauer said.
Diana Sundwall is with the non-profit, Infants Remembered in Silence. The organization, which operates the gravesite, says in the past other mementos have been stolen.
"It's bad enough to steal from a grave of anyone who has passed away, but to steal from a child that's passed away it really hurts everyone's heart and it really is gut wrenching for everyone," said Sundwall.
"This is not just my child. Many parents have a child here so it's pretty upsetting," said Bauer.
The families of the babies buried in the cemetery say the items are so small they haven't notified police.
