Police Warn of 'Pigeon Drop' Scam in Minnetonka

Two Minnetonka women say they've been scammed out of a combined $19,000 in part of an elaborate scheme many have never even heard about.

The two victims were walking to their cars at the Cub Foods in Minnetonka when they were convinced to hand over thousands of dollars as part of a $100,000 'pigeon drop' scam.

It's a popular scheme, even showcased in the Nicolas Cage movie 'Matchstick Men.' In a pigeon drop, the thieves pretend to not know each other and say they found a large sum of money.

They ask if it's the victims. When they say no, one claims to have an attorney friend nearby who says they can keep the money, but it's better if they invest it with some extra cash hoping the victim hands money over.

"The people that do it are generally pretty good at what they do, well dressed, pretty polished in their delivery," said Sgt. Dave Riegert.

One of the victims handed over $9,000, while the other offered up $10,000.

Last week, police say a 71-year-old woman was also scammed out of money at the same Cub Foods, and in April, an 82-year-old woman was the target in the Byerly's parking lot.

Riegert says the crimes are likely related.

Police say there could be more victims who are too embarrassed to come forward. They are offering a reward in hopes of catching the two female suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Minnetonka Police Department at (952) 939-8500.
