5 EYEWITNESS NEWS talked to businesses and to an economist to find out what Favre's name on the roster means for the local bottom line. Certainly, already there's a lot more interest in Friday's pre-season game, and all the games that will follow. But will that interest turn into a financial impact? From a marketing stand point, this is a master stroke," said professor George John of Carlson School of Management. He said, "Brett Favre being signed here energizes the casual fan. It seals the deal for excitement for the season." John says the casual fan translates into more cash via restaurants and sports bars and apparel sales. Hotels could also benefit. Some fans think Favre's arrival could revive the new stadium discussion. But not everyone agrees. DFL State Senator John Marty, of Roseville, said, "Minnesotans have always been Vikings fans. They're going to be Vikings fans with our without Brett Favre. Just because we're fans doesn't mean we should open up the checkbook to whatever amount of money they want." The Favre effect is difficult to quantify, however most agree there will be one. |
