It could be a close race if Rep. Michele Bachmann faces off against a prominent Democrat who could raise a lot of money and national support. For weeks, the political blogoshpere has been full of speculation that Assistant Senate Majority Leader Tarryl Clark might challenge Bachmann. On Wednesday, sources close to Clark tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she will run. Clark, a strong voice of the DFL-controlled Senate, has gained name recognition and an elevated standing in the party. It could also position her perfectly to take on the Republican many DFLers consider their public enemy number one. Bachmann closely took a three-point win over 6th Congressional District challenger Elwyn Tinklenberg during the 2008 election, but it exposed her vulnerability in a usually safe Republican district. Bachmann's closeness to Republican strategist Karl Rove and former President George W. Bush made her a favorite target of Democrats. But Clark will also have her own issues winning the district--including being the face of the Democratic Senate that just passed a large tax hike. Tinklenberg says he's considering to run again in 2010, and Dr. Maureen Reed--a 2006 candidate for Lt. Governor in the Independence Party--says she's planning to run. |
