Patricia Becht, 42, was formally charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the death of her son Michael Vonheath Becht Jr., and attempted murder of her 11-year-old daughter Ericka Freeman. After the hearing, police revealed Becht used the drug Seroquel—commonly used to treat mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia—to try to kill the two children and herself. According to the criminal complaint, each child took 10 of the pills and Becht had taken 25. She was found in the bathroom, while her son, who has autism, was found lying in his bedroom at the family’s home in the 700 block of First Avenue South. A suicide note was also found at the scene, police say, which was addressed to her 16-year-old daughter Cara Freeman. "I don't have much to say, only that we are happy to be gone," it read. Freeman was not in the home at the time of the incident. On Wednesday, the teen told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS hasn’t been able to speak to her 11-year-old sister or mother since the incident on July 6. Earlier this week, Becht was released from the hospital and booked into the Dakota County Jail. She currently remains in custody with bail set at $1 million. The court also ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. If convicted, Becht faces life in prison. Dakota County Social Services say they’ll find a place for Becht's two daughters to stay during the investigation. There has not been a homicide in South St. Paul since 2002. |
