Airline Claims MSP Terminal Name Change Would Hurt

The airport commission has approved to plan to change how terminals are named at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Wednesday.

In May, the Metropolitan Airports Commission announced their desire to simplify the Humphrey and Lindbergh Terminals by renaming them Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

While it might not seem confusing to differentiate Lindbergh Terminal from Humphrey, the airport says it's the number one source of complaints from out-of-town travelers who say they’ve missed flights due to the two locations.

Dennis Probst with the MAC says there are at least 12 complaints each month about the two terminals—or in some cases, people not even knowing there were two terminals.

An airport spokesman tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the change will now cost about $2.2 million, up from the initially proposed $1 million price tag. The spokesman explains the rise in cost is due to need for additional signs will need to be built along Interstate 494, and change the 40 current signs with the new Terminal 1 or 2 language, along with airline information.

The airport is the only one in the nation with two terminals that aren't on the same road after exiting. In addition, many passengers say the names are tricky to separate.

If the name change is approved by the full the MAC Council on July 20, the new signage would be in place by the end of the year.
