It started as the dream of just a few people more than 20 years ago. They wanted to build a temple where Hindus from across the region could gather and celebrate. Sunday that dream finally became reality. "Today is unbelievable. we've been waiting for this for years," said Shashi Gupta of St. Paul. There are between 25,000 and 30,000 Hindus living in the Midwest. Many of them traveled to Maple Grove Sunday to celebrate their local dieties under one roof as the temple officially opened its doors. "We never dreamed that this would come together like this, where all the community will get together," said Ramesj Gupta of North Oaks. Worshipers carried statues of those dieties around the temple in a special parade. They said special prayers in a celebration of life, compassion, and tolerance. Organizers called it one of the most unique temples in the world. "You have to go thousands and thousands of miles in India to see same type of temple where they're all put together in one location," said Ramesh Gupta. It's a celebration of unity and diversity.Organizers say this temple isn't just for Hindus. It's open to people from all religions and backgrounds. "This is everybody's temple. Please visit anytime any day of the week," said Shashi Gupta. |
