A cattle barn fire in Stearns County early Thursday left 25 calves dead and the barn destroyed, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies and fire crews were dispatched to the Wuertz Dariy Farm on County Road 14 near Melrose about 12:52 a.m. Thursday on a report of a barn fire.

When they arrived, authorities found a cattle barn fully engulfed in flames, the sheriff’s office release says.

A passerby had awoken the homeowners earlier, and they were able to open a gate to release some of the cows trapped inside. But according to the release, about 25 calves were killed. The barn was a complete loss. No humans were injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
