St. Paul police are still searching for a driver who led officers on a high-speed chase early Wednesday morning.

Police say they tried to stop the driver around 12:45 a.m. after officers thought he might be linked to a recent shooting.

The driver took off, and police chased the car through St. Paul, Maplewood, Little Canada and Roseville along Interstate 35 East.

"The hope was to get the car stopped, take the suspect (into) custody and move on with their night," department spokesperson Sgt. Mike Ernster said. "But it didn't turn out that way."

At one point, the driver narrowly missed a police squad car, and drove for miles in the wrong direction.

Police said they terminated the chase after 15 minutes when it became too dangerous.

A short time later, officers found the vehicle in an alley on the east side of St. Paul. But not the driver.

Investigators said they know who they're looking for, but they aren't identifying the man.
