St. Paul police are investigating a shooting that left three people hurt, including a 2-year-old girl, according to witnesses.

Witnesses said they heard anywhere from 20 to 30 shots just after midnight Monday on the 200 block of Maryland Avenue W. They said the shots came from an alley but ended up striking a home, in which the girl and others were at the time of the incident.

“Not too much we can do,” one neighbor said in the aftermath of the incident. “We have a little girl bleeding like that from the head; not too much you can do, just pray, basically. It's just a coward move. That's what it was, a coward move."

The neighbor said his family hit the floor when they heard the rapid gunfire. He said he had barely called 911 when his neighbors showed up frantically asking for help.

That's when, he said, he saw the girl bloodied from a gunshot wound to the head, so he told a KSTP crew at the scene he immediately put pressure on the wound until paramedics arrived.

Another witness said he heard and saw the very same thing.

"I’ve seen all of it, the little girl got hit in the head and it’s so crazy,” the second witness said. “This is so crazy - an innocent little girl that had nothing to do with none of this."

The first witness, the neighbor who said he was attempting to help the girl before paramedics arrived, said he's hoping someone with information will come forward.

Police have only confirmed that multiple victims were shot and that two sustained non-life-threatening injuries while the third has life-threatening injuries. More information is expected later Monday.

Editor's Note: KSTP initially reported the child shot was 3 years old based on information from witnesses. Police have since confirmed that the child is 2, and the story has been corrected.
