A St. Paul man accused of pulling a 14-year-old girl into an apartment unit and raping her has pleaded guilty to a count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor.
Forty-one-year old Adrian Raymaar Keys, a convicted murderer, had pleaded not guilty in October and February to four counts in connection to the case, including two of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one of kidnapping. He entered the amended plea Monday in Ramsey County District Court.
He's scheduled to be sentenced April 23.
The alleged assault occurred on or about May 23, prosecutors said.
A criminal complaint says the girl was walking down the hall of her cousin's apartment building on George Street West in St. Paul when she was pulled into a unit by Keys and another man, identified only as "Mac," and assaulted for between one and two hours.
During the assault, the complaint alleges, the men were smoking methamphetamine and blowing plumes of smoke into the mouth and nose of the teenager. When the men finally stopped, one threw a $20 bill in her direction as she fled the apartment.
Police say they have not been able to locate "Mac" and were hoping to release a description soon.
The teen said she reported the rape to three friends and then her mother, who took her to the hospital. She suffered injuries the evidence of which were apparent for six days, the complaint states.
The girl told investigators she had run into the men, who allegedly were visiting the apartment, a few days earlier while visiting a relative in the building. She reported that she and a friend had been singing and dancing, and that Keys approached her, complimented her and told her how beautiful she was, according to the complaint.
She said she found the comments intrusive and inappropriate, given Keys appeared in his 40s, and she was obviously a teenager. The complaint says that an acquaintance of the girl's was a friend of Keys' on Facebook, allowing investigators to identify the suspect.
In an interview with authorities, Keys admitted he and "Mac" had sex with the girl and smoked meth, but said she initiated it, and he heard her say she was 18.
Keys was convicted of second-degree murder and assault in 1995, when he was 17. He was sentenced to serve roughly 10 years, but it was unclear Thursday afternoon exactly how long he was in prison.
Keys also has felony drug (2010) and robbery (2005) convictions for which he has served time. A Minnesota Department of Corrections official said Keys was released to supervision with Hennepin County on Jan. 12, 2015, and his sentence and supervision expired on June 30, 2015.
However, his record indicates he was convicted of a DWI misdemeanor in July, 2012 and of a traffic offense in 2013.
