Mathews’ wife, Shawn, works as the school district assistant athletic director.

Mathews was hit and killed earlier this month while removing a piece of debris from the eastbound lanes of Highway 12 in Wayzata.

Parents, like Amy Dvorak, helped arrange a special tribute during Thursday night’s home football game for Shawn Mathews.

Blue and orange balloons were tied around the stadium to honor police officers. Dvorak said the community has been searching for a way to honor to Bill Mathews after his death.

“When something traumatic happens to somebody, whether you know them or not, it’s just nice to do something good,” Dvorak said.

Dvorak said her oldest son plays football and she’s seen Shawn Mathews at athletic events for years.

“She knows every student in that high school,” Dvorak said. “She’s there cheering on the St. Louis Park athletes and says ‘Hi’ to the families.”

The student section released a dozen blue balloons at the end of the national anthem before the game started. The announcer told the crowd to take a moment to send their thoughts to the Mathews family.

St. Louis Park athletic director Andrew Ewald said Shawn did not attend the game.

Parents also helped collected money to donate to the Officer Mathews Memorial Fund that was set up shortly after his death.
