Sen. Klobuchar Visits St. Croix Crossing Bridge Ahead of Grand Opening

It's taken decades to get the St. Croix Crossing Bridge linking Minnesota to Wisconsin to go from an idea to a reality.

In fact, building it was a federal issue because the project needed exemption from the Scenic Rivers Act. In order to get the massive structure built, Sen. Amy Klobuchar had to get every senator to sign off on the project.

Klobuchar got her first look at the new bridge on Friday.

"We have citizens in the Stillwater area that drive over that bridge every day and roll down their window and cross their fingers just in case something happens," Klobuchar said, speaking about the lift bridge. "You have boats running into it and the bridge is inoperable, it's reason enough to get a new bridge."

Over the next couple of years, crews will be turning the old historic Stillwater Lift Bridge into a bike and pedestrian bridge that links up with local trails.
