The snowy owl a Bloomington police officer was able to remove from a vehicle's grille has died.

According to a tweet from the department, the driver of the vehicle had been traveling along Interstate 494 Monday night when the vehicle struck the owl.

The officer was able to free the owl and it was taken to the Raptor Center for treatment.

Initially, the department said the owl only suffered minor injuries and was treated. However, the department issued an update Tuesday that the owl's internal injuries were more substantial than first thought and that the owl had died.
