Sheriff Issues Warning After String of Fish House Break-Ins in Rice County

February 07, 2018 06:37 PM

The Rice County Sheriff's Department has issued a warning after a string of break-ins at fish houses on area lakes.

Over the past two weeks alone, 16 fish houses on four lakes have been broken into. The thefts occurred on French, Shields, Mazanska and Roberts Lakes.

Fishing equipment and electronics were stolen.

"This equipment isn't cheap, and it's hard to go and buy new stuff if it gets stolen," fisherman Max Meister said.

"I'm going to take everything with me and make sure it's locked up."

Sheriff deputies on snowmobiles are now teaming up with the Minnesota DNR to step up nighttime patrols on the county's lakes.

Authorities remind people to take valuables with them, and not to leave them in their fish house.

Anyone with any information on the break-ins is asked to contact the Rice County Sheriff's Department at (507) 332-6010.
