UPDATE: One Juvenile Arrested After Police Say Threat Caused Lockdown of Orono Schools

Orono schools are on lockdown Wednesday following a social media post threatening gun violence that would occur at noon Wednesday, according to Orono police. The school district announced someone has been arrested in connection with the threat that led to the lockdown.

The district said at 3:15 p.m. it will dismiss elementary school students starting at 3:45 p.m. It tweeted that the students "are safe and being fed." The secondary students are scheduled to be released at 4:35 p.m. to parents. Buses should arrive at 5 p.m.

All after school activities have been canceled.

The district confirmed all schools are on lockdown, saying students are safe and parents should not go to the schools.

The police department said in a release it received two threats through social media, one that was vague and another that "was a direct threat of gun violence at the Orono Schools." It said police have requested help from Hennepin County and the FBI.

The police department said there was no indication of how long the lockdown might last. Old Crystal Bay Road has been closed off, police said.

The district had said earlier Wednesday that a separate concerning social media post Tuesday night was investigated and determined to not be a threat. Police and the district said the threats are not connected.

The district said it would provide updates every 15 minutes during the lockdown.
