A pedestrian walking on train tracks west of Elk River was struck and killed by a Northstar Line train on Sunday, according to a Metro Transit spokesman.

Preliminary indications are that two pedestrians were walking westbound on the tracks shortly before 6 p.m. when one of them – a young adult or teenage male – was struck near 192nd Avenue Northwest and Ogden Street Northwest, the spokesman said. One was killed, while the other was uninjured.

Spokesman Howie Padilla said the track in that area was shut down for about two hours. There were some passengers on the train at the time of the incident, Padilla said, and Metro Transit had made arrangements for a bus to retrieve them. But the train's location made a bus transfer unfeasible, he said.

The pedestrian was struck in an area where there was no road-track intersection, and the train had the right-of-way, Padilla said.
