Northfield police are now saying they’re not ruling out self-defense as the cause of a fatal shooting that happened this weekend.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired about 7:50 a.m. Sunday on the 1200 block of Jefferson Road.

Police and Northfield Hospital EMS-ambulance medics treated the woman, but she died at the scene. She was identified as 61-year-old Lilly Marie Kirckof. Police say she lived at the home.

Originally it was thought an intruder broke into the home, but investigators then said a woman in her 70s who was at the home was taken into custody. She was later released, authorities said, adding that there was no threat to the public.

On Tuesday, police said the victim and possible suspect were not related. They say it appears they were longtime acquaintances and also had a landlord-tenant relationship.

Police also said it may take well over a month for all of the evidence to be examined.
