INTERVIEW: NASA Astronaut Discusses Mission Aboard International Space Station

On Wednesday, KSTP spoke with NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei while he was aboard the International Space Station.

Vande Hei, who was born in Virginia, attended Benilde-Saint Margaret High School in St. Louis Park before going on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Saint John's University.

Following graduation in 1989, Vande Hei was commissioned in the U.S. Army through the ROTC program. He served as a combat engineer. He went on to complete a Master of Science degree at Stanford University.

In 2003, Vande Hei reported to the Army's 1st Space Battalion in Colorado. He served as an Army space support team leader. While in that role, Vande Hei was deployed to Iraq for 12 months as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then became the battalion's operations officer.  

In 2006, Vande Hei began his role as Capsule Communicator for the Mission Control Center in Houston. He supported 11 expeditions in this position. He is currently assigned to two expeditions through the International Space Station.

During his interview with KSTP, Vande Hei discussed what he is doing on his current mission, his work with growing lung tissue in space to fight cancer, how his education in Minnesota helped his career and how he hopes to inspire those interested in becoming astronauts.
