Patients, family members and staff created three new murals Wednesday for Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

One hospital in each state was chosen to participate in the PaintFest America Tour. The goal of the tour is to make patients feel comfortable, as if they are in someone’s home.

The participants used a paint-by-number approach to create the three murals.

“Here at Regions, we think it’s incredibly important to create a healing environment for our patients,” Regions Oncology Social Worker Caitlyn Squire said. “And one of the ways that we do that is through art and making sure that patients have a wonderful environment to get treated in.”

At each stop, a survivor and a current patient will also paint a portion of a mural that will be added to a display in New York featuring murals from all 50 states. The Minnesota patients were both diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

PaintFest is an initiative of the Foundation for Hospital Art, which is an Atlanta-based nonprofit.
