A mummified monkey was discovered during the renovation of the former Dayton's building on Nicollet Mall, a spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

"We continue to find pieces of history in The Dayton's Project as we redevelop the building," Dayton's Project spokeswoman Cailin Rogers said in an email Tuesday. "Unfortunately, this was one of the recent historic discoveries. We don't know the origin or story behind this find, but we have been working with local museums to learn more and to find homes for artifacts like this."

A photo of was posted to the Old Minneapolis Facebook page, which Rogers confirmed was the found mummified monkey.

Alan Freed, one of the site's co-administrators, says the likely solution came from a poster who said a longtime Dayton's employee told him a monkey had escaped from an eighth-floor pet store into the air conditioning ductwork in the 1960s.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
