A Montrose couple have been charged with 12 felony counts of tax evasion in Wright County, according to the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

The department said Susan Luanne McDonough and Michael Eugene McDonough have each been charged with three counts of failing to file state income tax returns and three counts of failing to pay state income taxes.

The criminal complaint says the couple willfully attempted to dodge taxes when they failed to file or pay state taxes between 2012 and 2014. The complaint cites Susan McDonough's profession as a personal and professional tax preparer as evidence the couple understood their tax obligations.

The McDonoughs had been paying state income tax in the years prior to 2012, and had paid federal income tax during that three-year period.

Each count carries a maximum five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.
