Multiple sources told KSTP the Minnesota Private Detective and Protective Agent Services Board is investigating serious allegations leveled against the security company hired by the state to protect U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Chicago-based company, Monterrey Security, confirmed in an email the state is looking into the company's hiring practices.
Sources said the allegations against Monterrey Security include: Falsification of government documents required for security training which includes "hundreds of employees", failure to conduct background checks on employees as required by Minnesota law and hiring people with felony criminal convictions--without proper security clearance--to work at U.S. Bank Stadium games and events.
The Monterrey Security website lists a number of high-profile stadiums and events that it provides security for around the country.
KSTP asked Monterrey Security for an interview regarding the investigation and a company spokesperson issued a statement that said, in part, "We immediately hired outside counsel to conduct a full, independent evaluation of our procedures ... as a rule, Monterrey Security conducts full background checks on all employees before they are hired and we forward their information for state review, as well, regardless of whether they are being hired as a security officer, ticket taker or guest services representative. Monterrey Security has never knowingly hired anyone as a security officer who was not qualified for that job. We have been in regular communication with the state regarding this anonymous complaint and intend to provide all necessary information to ensure our hiring process has followed---and continues to follow---all state regulations."
The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority approved the hiring of Monterrey Security when U.S. Bank opened in 2016. KSTP asked Kathleen Blatz, the newly appointed MSFA Chair, for an interview, but a MSFA spokesperson said Blatz, "was not available Wednesday."
