The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has decided not to stock trout in Square Lake after members of the local watershed district raised concerns about the possible impact the fish could have on the lake's water quality.

Square Lake, just north of Stillwater, is known for its water clarity and is a popular destination for local scuba divers.

Members of the Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District raised concerns that stocking the lake with trout could affect the food chain, which could have an impact on the water clarity of the lake.

The DNR has previously stocked trout in Square Lake. The DNR and the watershed district may revisit stocking the lake with trout in the future.
