It's the season for giving back, and Americans sure know how to help. In a recent study from World Giving Index, the U.S. ranked No. 5 for the world's most generous people. In 2016, charities received $389 billion and 7.9 billion hours of service per year. 

A study from WalletHub shows that Minnesota is third most charitable state in the country. The top five most charitable states are:

  2. Maryland
  3. Minnesota
  4. Wyoming
  5. Wisconsin

Fourteen factors such as volunteer rate, share of income donated, and public charities per capita, etc. determined which state was the most/least charitable state in the U.S..

  • North Dakota: 17
  • South Dakota: 8
  • Iowa: 32
  • Wisconsin: 5

Minnesota had the third most highest volunteer rate, and the second highest percent of population who donate time in the country.

 Volunteer Rate:

  • Best state: Utah
  • Worst state: Florida

  • Best state: tied for first are Utah, Georgia, and Wyoming

  • Best state: tied for first are Illinois, New Hampshire, and Utah
  • Worst state: North Carolina

Percent of Population Collecting/Distributing Food:

  • Best state: West Virginia
  • Worst state: Hawaii

Charities per Capita:

  • Best state: tied for first are Vermont and Montana
  • Worst state: Nevada
