The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is responding to inquiries it says it has received from visitors and residents living near Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park concerning waterlogged parkland and other issues.

A release from the MPRB said high precipitation levels the past two years have resulted in saturated ground. That included a wet October.

That has caused some storm water ponds to flow over onto nearby parkland. In some areas around Lake Nokomis, the board said parkland near the ponds is too saturated to mow at the moment.

Though the release said mowing will resume if those areas dry out before snow falls on a permanent basis.

The release also said in some areas around the park, parkland is settling.

The board says some areas may settle slightly lower than the surrounding ground, but are not sinkholes. Nor are they caused by broken or weakened stormwater pipes.

Instead, the board said the soft, peat-like soil in the area naturally compresses slowly over time.

The release also said the issues at Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park are not related to flooding issues at Hiawatha Golf Course.

"Although both share the same soft soil and are affected by high water, Lake Hiawatha does not empty into Lake Nokomis, so Hiawatha does not impact Nokomis," the release states.
