A 21-year-old Minneapolis man has been charged after police say he beat his 4-month-old daughter to death.

Cory Morris was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in Hennepin County District Court in the death of his daughter, Emersyn. Morris was arrested Saturday after police found the infant dead inside his duplex.

According to the criminal complaint, Morris called 911 at 4:59 p.m. Saturday and said he killed his baby.

Police arrived at the home on the 1900 block of Franklin Avenue Southeast and found firefighters performing CPR on the girl, who they said was unconscious and covered in dried blood.

Morris was arrested and admitted to punching Emersyn multiple times, police say. They say his clothes, hands and arms were covered in dried blood, and his right hand was swollen.

Emersyn was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma. Medical workers say the girl had severe bruising and swelling to her face and chest.

In an interview with police, Morris said his girlfriend, who is the mother of the child, left for work that day, so he was alone with Emersyn. He said he was watching TV when Emersyn started making “baby talk” noises, so he took her to the changing table in the bedroom.

He said the girl kept making noises, so he hit her to quiet her; he admitted to punching her about 15 times in the face and about seven times in the chest. He also said he squeezed her chest with both hands, according to the criminal complaint.

In an interview with police, the baby’s mother said Morris watched Emersyn 3-4 times a week while she worked. The girlfriend said Morris told her at 4:45 p.m. that day that he was going to jail because he had done something to their baby, according to prosecutors.

Morris is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
