A Minnesota nonprofit is stuffing backpacks full of school supplies for kids in need this week.

Eagan-based Simon Says Give is hosting a “High Five for Supplies” stuffing event at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The organization collected items from local TCF Bank branches in July as well as items donated at the Vikings’ stadium open house that took place about two weeks ago. This week, they are sorting the items and stuffing the backpacks.

Organizers say research shows that students who come to school without backpacks and school supplies are more likely to be bullied. The group hopes to provide 10,000 backpacks to students in need this year.

Since 2012, organizers say Simon Says Give has provided nearly 18,000 filled backpacks to students in need. The organization was founded by 12-year-old Mandi Simon, who came up with the idea when she was 7 years old.
