Authorities in Meeker County call it a mystery as they continue an investigation into the death of Shawn Medley.

The body of a 40-year-old Waverly man reported missing last Wednesday was discovered Sunday afternoon in rural Ellsworth Township.

The Meeker County Sheriff's Department says it received a report of an unresponsive male at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, the body of Shawn Jacob Medley was discovered. A release states the initial investigation indicates he had been dead for quite some time, and investigators believe he died somewhere other than where his body was discovered.

"We really owe it to him, and we owe it to his family, to figure out what happened here. It's a mystery," Meeker County Sheriff Brian Cruze said. "There's a gap between when he was last seen and when we found him. We're trying to fill in that gap."

Medley's family is shocked by the death.

"I couldn't picture anyone being an enemy of Shawn's," his stepmother, Susan Marie Medley, said. "Unbelievable someone could hurt such a kindhearted young man. It's been total chaos not knowing. A mystery, a real mystery."

Medley's vehicle was located abandoned in Litchfield early Saturday morning.

The matter remains under investigation. Anyone who may have had contact with Medley or his vehicle – a 2010 Silver Hyundai with license plate 748 HUD – during the past week is asked to call the Meeker County Sheriff's Department at 320-693-5400, or to leave information on the department's confidential tipline at 320-693-5411.
