After a state computer system upgrade, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety was supposed to have Driver and Vehicle Services up and running smoothly two weeks ago.
But many say they are still having issues.
Mike Hanson of Coon Rapids says computer problems have prevented him from getting specialty license plates for his 1964 Chevy Nova. Hanson says he tried three times last week to get the plates at license centers in Coon Rapids, Blaine and Circle Pines with no luck.
"I'm no I.T. guy, but I think they probably should have left the old system running in the background to circumvent some of this stuff while they waited," Hanson said. "I think it's a joke. I've been told for a week, 'tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow,' so I'm going try again tomorrow."
Asked for a response, the Department of Public Safety issued a statement that read, in part:
The (new) system replaces a 30 year old antiquated mainframe computer, making it possible to more efficiently and securely process vehicle titles and tabs. The MNLARS system has been online and available for deputy registrars to process their transactions 99.93 percent of the time since the launch on July 24.
DVS has processed 287,289 registration renewals (tabs) and 71,052 title transactions through the new system. That's about 20 percent more than was averaged under the old system, demonstrating that MNLARS can handle the volume.
Even with the increased capacity we realize that some customers may have experienced issues at their locally owned and operated deputy registrar, and the Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DVS) wants to hear from those people right away. Most issues can be resolved quickly if the customer reaches out to DVS or to a deputy registrar.
